The Cree Nation Government and Nature Conservancy Canada have partnered up in a project to help in the identification of Indigenous-led conservation areas by bringing together high quality scientific data and Cree knowledge about culturally significant sites and species.
Cree traditional knowledge integrated with scientific information will be used to develop maps and data that will show where the most important areas for conservation are located. This information will be submitted to Quebec which is committed to protect 20% of northern Quebec.
From July 2016 to November 2017, the CNG and NCC travelled to Chisasibi to gather cultural information. The results have been presented to the land users and to Chief and Council. Once a decision is made on the optimal scenario, it will then be submitted to Quebec where discussions will begin on designating areas for protection.
