Thanks to an initiative carried by La Grande Alliance and a unique partnership with @GouvQc, the Cree Nation Government is proud to announce that 23 new reserves of territory for protected area purposes in Eeyou Istchee totaling 39,000km2 have been designated.
The Waskaganish biodiversity reserve is located in the Nord-du-Québec administrative region, between 51°21’ and 51°38’ north latitude and 77°18’ and 78°52’ west longitude. It is situated some 40 km east of the Cree village of Waskaganish, within Baie-James Municipality. The protected area covers an area of 1,062.7 km2. Its’ eastern portion is accessible by Route 109, which runs through it over short distances.
The Assinica National Park Reserve was created in 2011 through the Paix des Braves Agreement between the Quebec government and the Cree Nation Government. The Quebec National Park is located about 20 kilometers north of the Cree community of Oujé-Bougoumou and north of the towns of Chapais and Chibougamau. Nearly one-fifth of its area is occupied by bodies of water, many of which are renowned for fishing, while others are for long canoe expeditions.
